American Buildings Company, a division of Nucor Corporation, the nation’s largest steel and steel products manufacturer and largest recycler is seeking to hire an Automatic Welding Machine Operator for our Structural Department in our pre-engineered steel buildings production facility in La Crosse, VA. This position is responsible for operating a Conrac welding machine to weld structural beams at high quality standards while working safely and efficiently.  Candidates must have ability to be qualified to AWS Certification D1.1 through our in-plant processes within the first 30 days of employment. We are looking for dedicated teammates that will help to promote the company’s mission statement to take care of our customers, make safety their priority and work in a drug-free environment.

 

BASIC FUNCTIONS 

  • Must be able to control multiple tasks at once and watch quality while running multiple controls on the panel box, clip off flux and sweep flux out of the frame while frame is conveying thru the machine.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply drawings to insure the Conrac is set up properly for flange size and web thickness. Must be able to fully understand voltage, speed control and weld setting charts.
  • Must be able to adjust pressure and height control for welding heads.
  • Operate the 5 ton overhead crane to replace weld wire coils (L50 1/16”), bundles of 781 recycled fluxes and for moving frames off the cross over conveyor.
  • Use various measuring instruments such as tape, square and protractor.
  • Maintain necessary inventory and records
  • Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions to proper supervision.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. 
  • Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintaining high quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as required

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to read tape measurements to 1/16th of an inch and apply measurements to shop drawings.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have ability to be qualified to AWS within 30 days & Canadian welding certification within 60 days.

 

PREFERENCES

  • Welding Certificate from a vocational or technical school or 1 year of welding experience.
